Summary

Join the Sierra Club as a Chapter Outings Program Manager, working remotely within Florida. You will plan and manage chapter outings, coordinate with local groups, manage program finances, and recruit and train volunteer leaders. Requirements

  • Demonstrate strong outdoors competencies including hiking, canoeing, kayaking, trail and GPS navigation, experience with camping set up and break down, and a strong commitment to sustainability during outdoor activities (ie. zero waste, recycling)
  • Possess community organizing experience with a strong desire to engage in collaboration, conduct outreach, and build networks throughout the organization and the state with a particular focus on engaging local groups and new, diverse constituencies in Sierra Club Florida’s outings program
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Be committed to continuously deepening and evolving your own understanding of systems of oppression through study, openness, and humility

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage the chapter outings program
  • Coordinate and integrate with local group outings
  • Define overall trip mix
  • Manage Chapter Outings daily operations
  • Manage program finances
  • Achieve budgeted income and expense goals
  • Coordinate with the Development Director to identify fundraising opportunities
  • Implement strategies for leader recruitment
  • Implement leader training, compliance, and stewardship
  • Manage program quality
  • Integrate conservation themes on trips
  • Coordinate all interactions with leaders and public land agencies
  • Develop and manage the outdoor activity training program
  • Define training objectives
  • Oversee development of curriculum and materials
  • Deliver training
  • Adhere to local and Sierra Club National training requirements
  • Work extensively with local group outing leaders and group executive committees
  • Work extensively with volunteer trip leaders and committee/subcommittee members
  • Develop and maintain outside contacts with public land agencies and a variety of outside vendors and service providers
  • Seek to conduct the program in a way that recruits new members, identifies potential leaders, and works with organizing and program staff to integrate new leaders into Sierra Club Florida campaigns
  • Identify the mix of trips that best meet organizational financial, program, recruitment, and equity objectives by working with volunteer subcommittees and group leaders
  • Manage trip promotion and budget development
  • Review trip itineraries for potential problems or conflicts with existing policy
  • Implement new leader recruitment activities
  • Define leader training requirements and implement stewardship activities designed to retain qualified leaders
  • Work with organizing and program staff to identify volunteers who can become leaders for Sierra Club Florida campaigns
  • Develop a plan to diversify the volunteer base through non-traditional, culture-based trips in coordination with the Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (EIJ) Committee
  • Plan and develop leader training programs to ensure quality and risk management standards for all trips in an integrated manner with local groups
  • Coordinate the development of publicity materials, including appearances in the state newsletter, The Pelican, with the Chapter Communications Director
  • Coordinate with the Communications Director on contact with the media, and the maintenance of ready-to-use, in-depth media packages
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to increase trip participation for both traditional SCFL membership and non-traditional constituencies
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of marketing activities
  • Manage all aspects of the Florida Chapter Outings program
  • Manage participant and leader complaints to maintain trip quality and reduce legal risk
  • Coordinate flow of information and materials to volunteer leaders and is responsible for ensuring that budgeted income is achieved and expenses are controlled
  • Establish policies and procedures for the safe operation of trips, in compliance with industry standards and insurance carrier requirements
  • Respond appropriately to trip incidents
  • Support implementation of the Chapter's efforts to cultivate an environment that benefits from a broad coalition of identities reflecting the richness of cultures across Florida
  • Seek and create opportunities to affirm the belonging of partners and members through political and policy work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess knowledge of Florida’s natural landscape and a deep knowledge and understanding of Florida’s unique natural landscape and the geographical presence of our volunteer base
  • Have experience in community organizing and engagement with a deep understanding of how organizing through outings can build power - experience with frontline and minority communities is a plus
  • Have first aid training such as CPR or lifeguard certification
  • Speak Spanish as a first or second language
