Join Stripe's second line of defense team as the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer for US merchant acquiring. Lead and manage merchant acquiring-related risk management and compliance programs, providing strategic direction and oversight. Ensure relevant risks are identified, assessed, mitigated, and monitored effectively. Maintain a comprehensive ERM program aligning with risk appetite and regulatory requirements. Promote a culture of compliance by managing the regulatory compliance program effectively. The role requires collaboration with various teams and stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. You will oversee regulatory exams, inquiries, or remediations and build and maintain Stripe’s relationship with regulators and financial partners. This role requires a deep understanding of US banking regulations and risk management frameworks.
Requirements
- 15+ years experience in an enterprise risk and compliance role, including experience managing both functions at a senior level and preferably within the US financial services industry (payments, banking, money services businesses)
- 5+ years of experience managing a team
- In-depth understanding of US banking regulations, risk management frameworks, and compliance principles
- Knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act, USA PATRIOT Act, OFAC regulations, and other relevant regulations
- Experience working with regulatory agencies
- Demonstrable experience of developing and rolling out large-scale compliance initiatives
- Experience in third-party risk management, particularly in overseeing and managing outsourced critical functions, including strong capabilities in the oversight of shared services arrangements
- Comfort juggling numerous aspects of an enterprise risk and compliance program
- Ability to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Ability to work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders
- An effective and relatable “culture of compliance” mentality
- Ability to develop and lead a team
Responsibilities
- Ensure the US merchant acquiring risk management and compliance programs are adequate and effective, and incorporate regulatory requirements and industry best practices
- Lead the process of identifying, assessing, and mitigating key risks, including managing operational risk, credit risk and fraud risk specific to the US merchant acquiring business
- Maintain a comprehensive compliance program that ensures adherence to all regulatory requirements, including development of an Annual Compliance Plan
- Ensure that controls are designed, implemented and tested appropriately
- Develop a robust risk and compliance reporting and monitoring framework
- Provide regular updates to senior management and directors
- Provide second line oversight on the provision of shared services and outsourcing arrangements
- Work with executives and board to set, lead and manage the culture of risk and compliance across the team and work with Legal, Enterprise Risk, Financial Crimes & Supportability and Regulatory Compliance teams to design and implement the risk appetite framework
- Design and deliver compliance training programs to relevant employees
- Serve as a thought leader for supporting and driving innovative, technology-focused compliance solutions with regulators and financial partners
- Partner with Stripe’s other Regulatory Officers (including Compliance Officers, BSA Officers/MLROs, Risk Officers) to enhance our overall Regulatory Compliance programs through contributing to strategic planning, goal setting, and more
- Build and maintain Stripe’s relationship with regulators and financial partners
- Oversee regulatory exams, inquiries or remediations
Preferred Qualifications
- Payments, banking, or fintech experience
- Master’s degree or relevant professional certifications (e.g., CRCM, CERP)
