Cloud Cost Engineer

Summary

Join Egen, a fast-growing data-first company, as a Cloud Cost (FinOps) Engineer. You will design and implement solutions for collecting, processing, and visualizing cloud cost data, collaborating with FinOps analysts to optimize cloud expenditures. This role involves working with platform engineers and researchers to ensure accurate metrics and cost predictability. The position is fully remote for US-based candidates, requiring work during US West Coast business hours. Requirements

• Proven experience in AWS platforms, with a deep understanding of relevant features including defining and managing tagging strategies
• Prior expertise with cloud cost management tools and data sources related to cloud usage, such as AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Storage Lens, and IBM Cloudability
• Strong software engineering background with proficiency in a high-level programming language such as Python
• Experience creating and managing dashboards using reporting platforms such as Grafana and Elastic Stack/ELK
• Experience in automation and integrating various data sources and systems, using common patterns such as ETL/ELT
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to process complex datasets and translate them into actionable insights
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, capable of working effectively across different teams

Responsibilities

• Design and implement solutions, and develop tools and systems to collect, process, and visualize cloud cost data
• Collaborate with FinOps analysts to manage and optimize cloud expenditures across our scientific workflows and platforms
• Design and implement the collection and analysis of operational and financial data from AWS cloud services
• Design and implement robust cloud cost management tools and near real-time dashboards using platforms such as Grafana and Kibana, which will include regular reporting of financial summary information to stakeholders
• Develop automated solutions and scripts to enhance the efficiency of cloud cost monitoring and reporting systems
• Collaborate with project teams and departments to ensure transparent chargeback and showback models for cloud costs
• Collaborate with FinOps analysts to continuously monitor service usage and spending to identify trends, cost-saving opportunities, enable rapid response to unexpected cost events, and provide forecasts
• Work with platform teams to implement cost-saving opportunities, such as increased use of EC2 Reserved Instances, EC2 Spot Instances, or alternative silicon opportunities

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience: 5+ years working in engineering, solution architecture, or DevOps, with a track record of successfully delivering complex projects
• Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, as well as independently when required
• Basic understanding of Unix concepts and Linux environments
• Basic understanding of high performance computing (HPC) concepts and environments
