Join Mercury's Credit & Underwriting team as a Credit & Underwriting Strategist to scale credit risk infrastructure and drive smarter credit decisions. You will lead initiatives improving credit assessment, monitoring, and growth for B2B charge card products and emerging offerings. Collaborate with underwriting, data science, product, and compliance teams to shape strategy and influence how Mercury extends credit. This role involves designing and refining underwriting methodology, exploring alternative strategies, evaluating credit signals, leading special projects, expanding eligibility criteria, and shaping strategy for new products. You will also develop frameworks for improving credit limit stability, establish and track goals, iterate on mitigation strategies, monitor credit performance, and maintain QA processes. The position requires deep credit expertise and strong analytical skills.
Requirements
- Deep credit expertise
- 5+ years in credit, underwriting, analytics, or risk roles (ideally in fintech, B2B lending, or corporate cards)
- Strong technical and analytical chops
- Proficiency in SQL and fluency in financial statement analysis (especially SMB/startup contexts)
- Ability to extract signal from imperfect data and communicate decisions clearly
- Ability to own projects from end to end
- Cross-functional fluency
- You’ve worked closely with Product, Engineering, Compliance, & Finance teams
Responsibilities
- Design and refine underwriting methodology
- Explore alternative underwriting strategies (e.g., revenue-based models, extended repayment terms)
- Evaluate and validate new credit signals, internally and via vendors
- Lead special projects
- Expand eligibility criteria for existing and upcoming credit products
- Shape underwriting strategy for new credit card products
- Develop frameworks for improving credit limit stability without increasing risk
- Help establish and track goals for various underwriting functions
- Iterate on existing mitigation strategies
- Monitor and assess credit performance
- Own and improve monthly underwriting audits
- Maintain QA processes for both credit reporting and decisioning systems
- Support loss forecasting and drive trend-based strategy development
- Drive data-informed decisioning
- Translate analysis into actionable credit strategy
- Recommend and implement KPI’s to improve risk decisioning, customer segmentation, operations, and loss
- Lead evaluation and implementation of third-party data vendors
- Support audits and compliance
- Prepare materials for internal and external audits
- Help deliver data and process diligence for regulatory and banking partners
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with consumer credit is a plus; experience in Cards strongly preferred
- Comfort underwriting eCommerce, venture-backed, or unconventional businesses
- You’re comfortable owning ambiguous projects and pushing them forward with minimal oversight
