Summary

Join the Global Cloud Services organization and manage the Public Cloud Cost & Usage governance team. This role involves establishing a long-range plan and monthly forecast of public cloud cost & usage, identifying optimization opportunities, and working with engineering teams for efficient resource usage. The Director of Cloud FinOps will also manage commit-based-discount coverage & utilization, and cost & usage tool dashboarding. This position reports to the Vice President of Technology Business Management & FinOps. Responsibilities include partnering with senior executives and engineers to implement cost-saving programs, communicating program progress to stakeholders, building cross-departmental relationships, developing status reports, reviewing data sets, supporting engineers' cost management, implementing a new cloud financial management tool, defining cost allocations, and developing process improvements. The role also involves soliciting cost-saving project ideas, prioritizing them, coordinating collaboration between teams, summarizing cloud cost levers, conducting briefings, training engineers, managing the cloud spend forecast, and reviewing inter-company chargebacks.

Requirements

  • Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving. This may include using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, analyzing AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact on the function or industry
  • Minimum of 7 years of proven experience in a FinOps or cloud financial management role
  • Deep knowledge of cloud cost management tools (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, Google Cloud Billing, CloudHealth, Cloudability, home-grown Cost-Usage tool)
  • Strong experience in financial forecasting, budgeting, and enterprise-level cost optimization strategies
  • Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and partner closely with Engineering, Finance, and Executive Leadership teams
  • Full professional proficiency in English (mandatory)

Responsibilities

  • Partner with senior executives and senior engineers to develop and implement department-wide public cloud cost-saving and optimization programs
  • Effectively communicate program goals, activities, progress, and risks to stakeholders with different backgrounds, including financial, engineering, and operations. Translate technical concepts into business impacts
  • Build cross-departmental relationships to solve cloud usage/cost problems
  • Develop and maintain effective status reports for cloud cost and engineering team progress on cost-saving projects
  • Review and summarize large data sets to provide insight to senior executives on progress toward meeting cloud cost, tagging, and optimization goals
  • Support engineers’ cost management activities by building custom cost reports and custom lists of savings opportunities
  • Coordinate the implementation of a new cloud financial management tool for cloud cost management by engineering teams
  • Define and implement cost allocations to measure unit metrics of cost per customer and cost per instance
  • Develop and implement process improvements for managing cloud costs
  • Solicit cloud cost saving project ideas from multiple sources, estimate their potential savings, and prioritize them with input from the engineering teams
  • Coordinate collaboration between engineering teams to share best practices for reviewing and optimizing cloud spend
  • Summarize detailed cloud cost levers and tasks into high-level themes and conduct periodic briefings/status updates to stakeholders and executive management
  • Train and educate engineers on how to review and track their cloud spending
  • Manage the cloud spend forecast, soliciting input from engineering teams and communicating expected spend to finance for budgeting
  • Review inter-company chargeback with News Corp and Finance teams to ensure accuracy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud providers is a strong plus
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Finance, IT, Cloud Computing, or Business) is a strong plus
  • Someone who actively contributes to the FinOps community, speaks at conferences, or is regarded as a trendsetter in cloud financial management
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner or AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
  • Experience with automation tools for cost management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to present financial insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Proactive and self-driven mindset
