Summary
Join NPR's Newshub team as an Editor focused on audience strategy for digital storytelling. You will be responsible for crafting compelling headlines and social media content, distributing journalism across various platforms, performing keyword research, and monitoring social media trends. This temporary, 12-week assignment requires at least three years of experience editing and managing social media accounts, preferably in a news organization. You should possess excellent writing and editing skills for digital platforms, strong news judgment, and familiarity with AP Style. The role is remote-permitted, based out of Washington, DC, and offers a competitive hourly rate with comprehensive benefits.
Requirements
- Have at least three years of experience editing and managing branded social accounts on deadline, preferably at a news organization
- Have experience working in journalism
- Demonstrate excellence in writing and editing for digital platforms
- Demonstrate news judgment
- Demonstrate familiarity with AP Style
- Have the ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
- Have the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
- Have the ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
- Have a proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
- Have a Bachelorβs degree in journalism, or a writing-intensive discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
Responsibilities
- Draft and edit display copy, including story headlines, social media summaries for Facebook and alert language
- Send push notifications for planned features and breaking news
- Liaise with third-party platforms to distribute daily journalism, including Apple News and Flipboard
- Perform keyword research and advise SEO for daily news items
- Monitor social media and search trends and recommend story assignments based on audience and news demands
- Write and edit for the web and social media with speed, accuracy, and voice while on deadline and/or under pressure
- Be well versed in audience metrics and use real-time analytics to inform decision making
- Exhibit stellar news judgment and ensure all materials meet NPR News standards and practices, including standards of accuracy and fairness
- Show flexibility in priorities and subject matter under tight deadlines
- Be willing to work weekends and evenings, as news demands warrant
- Perform other duties as assigned
