Summary

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional engineering experience, and in‑depth knowledge with Java and at least one frontend technology
  • Experience with Java and legacy Liferay or Liferay Digital Experience Platform (DXP)
  • Experience experimenting with and/or utilizing AI tools and services to create and deliver software, and a strong willingness to leverage AI where appropriate to improve outcomes
  • Hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, or similar)
  • Experience with measurement and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog) and a strong understanding of application observability
  • Familiarity with secure development best practices and Zero Trust principles; ability to safeguard sensitive data while working in an open‑source environment

Responsibilities

  • Develop accessible, performant, and scalable frontend applications within a cross-functional Agile team using open-source technologies and industry-standard frameworks
  • Maintain and enhance legacy Liferay and Liferay DXP applications, while collaborating with product and design teams to re-platform features into modern web and mobile experiences
  • Write and maintain Java code for Liferay components, implement bug fixes, manage technical debt, and ensure compliance with VA security standards
  • Integrate with VA APIs and backend services, ensuring secure, accurate data rendering and discoverability via the Lighthouse API Hub
  • Implement and maintain automated testing (unit, integration, functional, load, accessibility) to ensure full coverage of delivered functionality
  • Effectively leverage AI-powered IDEs such Copilot and Cursor to analyze existing code, develop features, write unit tests, and debug issues while retaining responsible oversight and reviewing all work produced
  • Support performance monitoring, Tier 3 triage, and incident response for Liferay-based systems, ensuring timely resolution and documentation of issues
  • Leverage VA cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines for scalable, reliable, and automated deployments; reuse existing infrastructure whenever possible
  • Uphold Zero Trust security principles, ensure sensitive data is never exposed in source code, and contribute all non-sensitive code and documentation to public repositories unless otherwise directed
  • Participate in pair programming, in‑depth peer reviews, and blameless post‑mortems; continuously incorporate learnings
  • Support the Engineering Community of Practice and broader Agile Six engineering culture through knowledge‑sharing, mentoring, and participation in internal initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Experience leveraging AI tools and services to create and deliver software to production in a professional capacity
  • Experience with health-related services and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards
  • Professional experience delivering software for or within federal agencies, especially the VA
  • Familiarity with the VA.gov Platform, VA Mobile Platform, and Lighthouse delivery infrastructure
  • Prior contributions to open-source projects and/or publicly shared technical documentation
