Lexicon Linguist

Summary

Join our team as a linguist to help develop a lexicon! This remote, freelance position involves creating phonetic transcriptions for Jamaican English using IPA or SAMPA. The project lasts up to one week with a flexible workload of up to 15 hours. Ideal candidates possess idiomatic fluency in Jamaican English, a postgraduate linguistics degree specializing in phonetics, and experience with phonetic data. Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines are essential. This is a short-term project starting at the end of August 2025.

Requirements

• Idiomatic fluency in English (Jamaica)
• Postgraduate degree in linguistics with a specialization in phonetics
• Experience using the IPA and SAMPA phonetic alphabets
• Prior experience with linguistic data, especially phonetic data
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to turn around deliverables on a tight schedule

Responsibilities

• Create phonetic transcriptions using the IPA or SAMPA phonetic alphabet for English (Jamaica)
• Create phonetic transcriptions for a wordlist provided by us
• Put together the lexicon with a closed set of phonemes
