Summary

Join Global Fishing Watch as their Marine Biodiversity Training Manager and play a key role in supporting more effective marine protected areas (MPAs) and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). You will lead the technical inputs to the biodiversity and marine protection related capacity development elements of the Program team work, collaborating closely with regional teams to develop training materials and deliver training activities. This highly collaborative position requires exceptional communication skills and the ability to adapt to multiple work cultures. The successful candidate will have significant experience in marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and a strong interest in mentoring and coaching. The role involves creating globally standardized training packages, supporting regional training programs, and staying updated on relevant policy frameworks. This is a remote, fixed-term position (2 years) with a competitive compensation package.

Requirements

  • University degree in marine sciences, fisheries science or fisheries/marine management
  • At least 5 years of experience in government, academia or non-governmental organisations in the field of marine biodiversity, conservation and sustainable use
  • Expert level knowledge of human (e.g. vessel tracking data) and environmental data types used to designate and monitor marine managed areas
  • Working knowledge of English and one either Spanish or French

Responsibilities

  • Lead role in writing and revising existing training material to create a globally standardised training package that can be adapted and updated for regional implementation
  • Support regional teams in delivering training programs with core countries and regional institutes (preparation, delivery and evaluation). Training programs will include a variety of engagements - from classroom based teaching, mentoring, coaching of trainees and creating institutional level support like standard operating protocols
  • Support the drafting and development of training content for remote and in-person events, as well as mass online learning courses (MOOCs) and webinars
  • Keep up-to-date with practical operational developments and regulatory changes within core country and international policy frameworks (e.g. CBD, BBNJ) in order to inform training content revision and conduct internal training or coaching on these issues
  • Assist the capacity development team in aligning Global Fishing Watch work with best practices within marine ecosystem protection
  • Monitor and contribute expert knowledge into Global Fishing Watch dataset and product development and advise on compliance training related opportunities
  • Assist Head of Division in reviewing common biodiversity or MPA/OECM related analysis report types to create standardised approaches to guide regional analysts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience of conducting training, facilitation and participatory workshops for adult learning
  • High interest in working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven tools and datasets in marine science
  • Experience in designating MPA/OECM processes
