Summary
Join Griffith University's Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research (GCSCR) as a PhD candidate to investigate organisational sustainability in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander not-for-profit heritage institutions. This research scholarship, connected to an Australian Research Council Discovery Project, focuses on the sustainability challenges faced by community heritage organisations. The successful candidate will collaborate with a research team and case study institutions, contributing to both academic and industry outputs. The position offers a stipend, potential for remote work, and is based at either the Gold Coast or Nathan campus. The scholarship is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants who meet specific academic requirements. Applications close on February 21, 2025.
Requirements
- Have a background in critical heritage studies (or associated fields like museology and archival science), Indigenous studies, leisure studies, sociology or organisational, business and management studies
- Have experience in Indigenous methodologies and methods and/or qualitative methods, including skills in ethnographic observation, in-depth interviewing and qualitative analysis
- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who identify themselves as such, and are accepted by the community with which they are associated with as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelor's degree with honours equivalent to class 2A honours or above, or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a bachelor honours degree, or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with the Equivalent qualifications for HDR program admission
Responsibilities
- Investigate opportunities and challenges for organisational sustainability in not-for-profit institutions in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage sector
- Collaborate with other members of the research team and the case study institutions to deliver a focused project with academic and industry-focussed outputs
- Extend the organisational reach of the Discovery Project by selecting two additional not-for-profit Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage institutions to include in the study
Preferred Qualifications
- Have evidence of a passion for collaborative research and the protection and management of Australiaโs Indigenous cultural heritage
- Have industry experience in the galleries, libraries, archives and museums sector
