Principal Database Platform Engineer

Summary

Join Onebrief as their first Principal Data Engineer and play an instrumental role in designing and implementing a scalable, secure, and high-performance data platform. Build the data engineering function from the ground up, influencing both technical direction and team development. This hands-on role involves working at both macro and micro levels, designing and improving architecture and data pipelines, and advising product/engineering and sales teams on data integrations. You will be a technical leader guiding Onebrief’s overall data strategy, bringing your mission-driven approach and experience in Defense Tech to the table. The ideal candidate possesses strong business acumen and a proven ability to lead projects and mentor engineers. This position requires a high level of security clearance.

Requirements

• 8+ years in software and/or data engineering, with a focus on building data platforms
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field
• Proficiency in SQL, Python, and TypeScript
• Expertise in PostgreSQL and cloud-based relational databases (e.g., AWS RDS)
• Deep knowledge of data streaming tools (e.g., Kafka), data orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow,), and data visualization tools (e.g., Apache Superset)
• 3+ years of experience working with ETL and ELT
• Experience with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and Infrastructure as Code
• Strong diagramming, documenting, and collaborating skills with the ability to tailor complex concepts to audiences with varying levels of technical depth
• Proven ability to lead projects and mentor engineers
• Active Department of Defense Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility
• Ability to obtain and maintain special program access within a reasonable period of time as determined by the needs of the business
