Principal Software Engineer

Summary

Join Nava, a public benefit corporation, as a Principal Software Engineer (FHIR)! As a vital bridge between Nava, technical experts, and clients, you will drive the FHIR-based software services strategy and architecture within major federal agencies. You will collaborate with clients, shape product roadmaps, provide subject matter expertise, train engineers, and guide technical direction. This role requires expertise in HL7 FHIR and related standards, significant software engineering experience, and strong communication skills. Requirements

• Have current and/or prior experience developing API endpoints with Kotlin, Java, Python, Ruby, etc
• Have at least 6 years of experience working in an agile, multidisciplinary team environment, preferably designing and building medium to large-scale web applications on Cloud Platforms
• Have strong experience in the healthcare industry - you live and breathe HL7/FHIR!
• Have experience utilizing Smart on FHIR standards to build healthcare applications
• Possess tenacity to dive into problems and iterate in working code
• Be equal parts systems thinker, software engineer and overall evangelist
• Be highly resourceful, reliable, and detail-oriented
• Have the ability to think strategically around trade-offs and short term vs. long term benefits
• Have an adaptive, empathetic, collaborative and positive mindset
• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, technical and otherwise
• Be legally authorized to work in the United States and meet any other requirements for government contracts for which they are hired
• Have work authorization that does not require visa sponsorship, either currently or in the future
• Be subject to a government security investigation and meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances

Responsibilities

• Work with software engineers in understanding FHIR objects and relationships, the standards landscape, and implementation considerations related to claims data
• Craft long-term strategic roadmaps related to FHIR conformance and overall standards development
• Actively work within the HL7 and related standards bodies
• Develop a deep understanding of the developer user space and their needs now and in the future
• Prototype new features, tools, etc
• Work closely with product, design, and engineering teams to share developer user needs now and in the future. This should deeply inform project direction
• Review, improve, and write user documentation, product and technical plans, and software with an eye toward user needs now and in the future
• Take on software engineering tasks on an as-needed basis, including building new features needed by users or debugging user issues
