Summary

Join Bixal as a Senior Front-End Engineer and play a pivotal role in maintaining and evolving the VA Design System (VADS) and VA Forms Library. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to build and optimize reusable, accessible web and mobile components for VA digital services, directly impacting millions of veterans. This full-time position, contingent on contract award, offers a one-year performance period with opportunities for future success. The role is remote and requires US work authorization. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, plus at least four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Demonstrated experience in front-end development with React.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS (SASS/SCSS)
  • Experience working with design systems, component libraries, and accessibility best practices
  • Knowledge of modern build tools (Webpack, Vite) and CI/CD pipelines
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs, GitHub workflows, and version control
  • Experience with mobile-first and responsive design principles

Responsibilities

  • Build and optimize reusable front-end components using React.js, USWDS, and modern front-end technologies
  • Enhance the VA Design System (VADS) and Forms Library, ensuring consistency and usability
  • Work with design and development teams to improve the Veteran-facing digital experience
  • Implement Section 508, WCAG 2.2 AA, and Mobile Content Accessibility Guidelines (MCAG) compliance
  • Optimize web and mobile components for performance and seamless interactions
  • Collaborate with UX designers and researchers to refine user flows and interaction patterns
  • Help eliminate inconsistencies in Veteran-facing digital forms and applications
  • Work in agile sprints with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and backlog grooming to maintain development velocity
  • Assist in the migration of VAHB mobile design components into VADS
  • Maintain shared Figma libraries and documentation for design and development teams
  • Contribute to experimental designs and help convert them into stable system components
  • Other relevant duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) or other government-focused design systems
  • Familiarity with React Native for mobile development
  • Previous experience with VA.gov, VAHB mobile app, or other federal platforms
  • Knowledge of Drupal or CMS platforms used in government services
