You will play a key role in developing scalable backend systems for Sphere, our flagship conversational AI platform. This role involves designing and building high-availability services, integrating backend systems with AI components, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. You will also be responsible for resolving performance bottlenecks and mentoring junior engineers. The ideal candidate possesses strong backend engineering experience, expertise in Node.js, and familiarity with AI infrastructure. This is a remote position based in India.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience in backend engineering, ideally working on real-time or user-facing platforms
- Strong programming skills in Node.js, with deep understanding of asynchronous programming and system design
- Proven experience building and scaling distributed services, APIs, and event-driven systems
- Familiarity with infrastructure tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience integrating services with data stores, message queues, and external APIs
- Exposure to conversational AI, LLM infrastructure, or voice interfaces
Responsibilities
- Design and build high-availability, low-latency services powering AI-based voice and digital agents
- Contribute to the orchestration logic that handles tool invocation, conversational memory, session management, and multi-turn logic
- Integrate backend systems with AI components such as language models, speech pipelines, and structured data sources
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including ML, product, compliance, and UX to deliver intelligent and trustworthy user experiences
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, reliability issues, and system-wide scalability challenges
- Participate in design and architecture reviews, and mentor junior engineers across the team
- Uphold engineering excellence through strong documentation, testing, observability, and DevOps practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on AI-enabled or ML-integrated platforms
- Understanding of compliance, security, and auditability requirements in regulated environments
- Prior experience working in fast-paced, high-growth product teams
