Software Engineer, AI

Valence
Summary
Join Valence, a Series A B2B SaaS company, and be hands-on in shaping the technical foundation of our LLM-powered product used by Fortune 500 companies. You will collaborate with the Technical Lead and CEO to build and ship features, debug complex problems, and scale systems. This is a ground-floor opportunity to create and own something category-defining. You will architect, build, and optimize core components of our LLM-driven coaching engine, collaborate with product, design, and infrastructure teams, and own end-to-end systems. You will also influence our engineering culture and help shape hiring and internal processes. This role offers significant ownership, strong ties to the executive team, and competitive compensation and benefits.
Requirements
- Engineering Skills: You've got significant experience in a combination of scaling startups and best-in-class engineering organizations, with deep Python expertise (Django preferred) and confidence querying databases independently to build your own datasets
- AI Fluid: You've got hands-on experience from ML roles, coursework, side projects, and/or LLM applications—bonus points for running evals or demonstrating a great grasp of model quality/performance tradeoffs
- Builder at Heart: You’ve architected and shipped production-grade systems - ideally in AI, distributed infrastructure, or high-velocity B2B environments. You balance speed with scalability
- Versatile and Pragmatic: You move fluidly between crafting clean abstractions and deploying scrappy experiments when speed to insight matters most
- Product Focused: You write reliable code and care as much about how your work performs in the hands of customers as how it performs in CI
- Startup Fluent: You thrive in ambiguity, value momentum over perfection, and happily wear multiple hats when it means unblocking the team
- Data-Driven Operator: You think in experiments, validate with data, and believe that observation beats assumption every time
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and optimize core components of our LLM-driven coaching engine
- Collaborate with product, design, and infrastructure to deliver delightful, resilient user experiences
- Own end-to-end systems: from model integration to frontend delivery, evaluation and observability
- Design for scale, security, and performance across enterprise environments
- Influence and evolve our engineering culture, roadmap, and technical bar
- Debug across the stack—from model behavior to data infra to UI
- Help shape hiring, tooling, and internal processes as we grow
Benefits
- Ownership of projects and strategic priorities regardless of seniority
- Strong ties to the executive team, a culture of transparency and engagement with strategic decisions
- Options from day one, which means you will be on the ownership track right away
- Competitive salary and equity packages
- Comprehensive health coverage (medical, dental, and vision) from day 1
- Provision of anything you need to be successful - learning tools, hardware, office equipment, software
- Generous PTO, company-wide R&R shutdowns and paid leave for parents
- A WFH stipend, phone stipend and support to work in a We Work or other space as preferred
