Software Engineering Intern, Geospatial

Summary

Join Wherobots’ dynamic team as an intern and help build the future of distributed geospatial cloud databases. You will contribute to building new features, designing and implementing APIs for geospatial queries, and enhancing the performance and reliability of WherobotsDB. The team uses Java, Scala, Rust, Python, and Kubernetes. This is a great opportunity to work on a cutting-edge, scalable geospatial database and be part of a fast-growing company. The internship offers competitive compensation, with a monthly salary range of US$7,500 to US$10,000. Flexibility in work arrangements, including remote options, is available.

Requirements

• The ideal candidate has a passion for open-source projects and communities, and is eager to learn and contribute
• Strong technical background, including coursework or project experience related to scalable, distributed systems or spatial query algorithms
• Proficiency in Java and/or Scala required
• Demonstrated interest in building high-quality, maintainable, and observable software
• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and fundamentals of distributed systems
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with interest in working effectively in a hybrid or distributed team environment

Responsibilities

• Implement new vector and raster functions and algorithms to extend Wherobots’ geospatial capabilities, while also improving related documentation
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements, identify technical solutions, and deliver high-quality software
• Make open-source contributions to many Apache projects including Sedona, Spark, Arrow, Parquet, Iceberg and other open-source software packages where necessary

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience programming in Python
• Experience with large-scale geospatial data processing and applications
