Staff Software Engineer

Summary

Join Mudflap's transactions and payments team as a Staff Software Engineer and play a critical role in shaping the future of our platform. Lead architectural initiatives, mentor team members, and drive the technical direction of our backend systems built primarily in Ruby on Rails. This fully remote position requires strong technical leadership and experience building robust, scalable backend systems. You will collaborate cross-functionally and take ownership of projects from concept to deployment. Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software development experience
• Extensive experience building robust, scalable backend systems with Ruby on Rails
• Proven track record of technical leadership and mentoring in high-performing teams
• Strong understanding of API design, system architecture, and backend performance optimization
• Passion for solving complex problems and simplifying them for others
• Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment typical of early-stage startups
• Curious, self-driven, and committed to continuous learning and improvement

Responsibilities

• Drive technical strategy for key initiatives, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across our systems
• Lead the design and development of large-scale, production-grade applications and APIs using Ruby on Rails
• Architect complex features and third-party integrations that are resilient and maintainable
• Set standards for technical excellence, code quality, and best practices across the engineering organization
• Mentor and guide engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and technical planning
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions
• Influence architectural decisions and contribute to long-term technical planning
• Design scalable, future-proof data models and database schemas
• Take full ownership of projects—from concept through to deployment and beyond
• Lead by example with clean, well-tested, maintainable code
