Staff Software Engineer-Data Platform

Summary

Join Canva's Data Platform Group and help redefine how the world experiences design. Work from various locations, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, with flexibility in where and how you work. Architect and build data platform infrastructure services on Snowflake and AWS using Python, Go, and Kubernetes. Design security controls and governance systems for data. Lead large cross-team initiatives and mentor platform engineers. This role requires a seasoned software engineer with experience in large-scale data warehouse platforms and specific technologies.

Requirements

• You're a seasoned software engineer with experience building large-scale data warehouse platforms
• You have strong hands-on experience with Python or Java or Go
• Hands-on experience using AI in coding to drive greater impact
• You have hands on experience with AWS architecture
• You've led large technical initiatives across multiple engineering teams, balancing strategic planning with hands-on implementation
• You understand how to architect security and governance controls that protect data assets
• You excel in a tech lead role that spearheads both technical implementation and strategic architectural decisions
• You're passionate about building reliable, secure, and scalable platform infrastructure that empowers data practitioners
• You excel at distilling technical vision from ambiguous requirements and translating complex infrastructure concepts into clear, compelling narratives for diverse stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Architecting data platform infrastructure services on Snowflake and AWS using Python, Go, and Kubernetes for environment management, lifecycle automation, and drift detection at scale
• Designing security controls including access management, data treatment frameworks, and attribute-based access controls that protect without hindering productivity
• Building governance systems for data provenance, sovereignty enforcement, and automated compliance across jurisdictional boundaries
• Leading large cross-team initiatives to deliver major platform capabilities
• Championing self-service mindset by designing infrastructure patterns that empower teams to safely provision and manage warehouse resources independently
• Mentoring platform engineers to establishing engineering excellence practices, iterative and value driven mindset towards capability development

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with our core technologies is a plus: Snowflake, AWS, Python, Go, Kubernetes and dbt
