Summary

Join Underdog, the fastest-growing sports gaming company, as a Backend Engineer on the Data Platform team. You will design, develop, and maintain internal APIs and workflows for seamless integration between internal services. This role involves building scalable backend systems, collaborating with engineers and data scientists, and implementing monitoring mechanisms. You will lead technical initiatives and code reviews in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience building microservices and APIs on a cloud environment, proficiency in Go, C++, or Rust, and experience with DevOps practices. Underdog offers competitive compensation, including a base salary range of $135,000-$150,000 plus equity, unlimited PTO, 16 weeks of parental leave, and a home office allowance.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience building microservices heavy backend systems and APIs for internal applications on a cloud environment (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Experience building and scaling backend systems and designing enterprise scale APIs for external and internal applications
  • Highly focused on delivering results for internal and external stakeholders in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or ECS
  • Advanced proficiency with Go, C++, Rust, or other similar programming languages (at least 2)
  • Intermediate proficiency with SQL
  • Experience with DevOps practices such as CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g. Terraform, CDK)

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices to enable efficient data retrieval and processing for internal applications
  • Greenfield and develop new backend systems for scalability, fault tolerance, and performance for a core part of Underdog’s future business
  • Collaborate with engineers, product owners, and data scientists to understand requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions
  • Implement and maintain monitoring, alerting, and logging mechanisms to ensure the health and accuracy of Underdog’s engineering systems
  • Lead technical initiatives and drive results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Lead code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and evangelize best practices to maintain code quality

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interest in sports
  • Prior experience in the sports betting industry
  • Prior experience developing production systems in Rust
