Summary
Join a fast-paced team as a Database Engineer I, supporting mission-critical systems with zero downtime expectations. Maintain and improve production database environments (MySQL/Aurora) on AWS and GCP. Diagnose and resolve performance issues, optimize queries and configurations, and collaborate with development teams on schema design. You will own database upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning, building automation tools to reduce manual effort. Provide on-call support and respond to critical incidents. This role initially requires brief onsite training in San Diego, CA, with remote work available in select U.S. states.
Requirements
- Bachelorβs degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Hands-on experience with MySQL and working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, etc.)
- Familiarity with distributed databases and replication strategies
- Comfort with Linux system internals and scripting (Shell, Python, Perl, etc.)
- A calm, problem-solving mindset, especially during high-stakes situations
- Clear communication skills for working with remote and global teams
Responsibilities
- Maintain and improve production database environments (MySQL/Aurora) hosted in cloud platforms like AWS and GCP
- Diagnose and resolve performance issues, outages, and scalability challenges
- Optimize queries, indexes, and database configurations
- Collaborate with development teams to design scalable, efficient schemas
- Own database upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning
- Build internal tools and automation to reduce manual operational effort
- Provide on-call support as part of a pager rotation and respond to critical incidents
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years managing MySQL/Percona 5.7/8 or Aurora at scale
- Experience with Atlassian tools like Confluence and Jira
- Previous experience in a DBRE or hybrid DBA/SRE environment
