Director of Engineering

Summary

Join Stitch Fix as a Director of Software Engineering and lead 5-6 engineering teams within the Shared Services group. Build strong engineering organizations, drive company objectives, and create scalable systems impacting client experience. Partner with various teams to ensure initiatives drive long-term growth. Invest in engineering managers' careers through coaching and mentorship. Develop and execute a technical strategy focused on scalability and client experience improvements. Lead change management efforts and participate in technical design discussions. Directly manage stakeholder relationships and define organizational metrics to track success. Lead build vs. buy decisions at a strategic level.

Requirements

• You have 10+ years of experience in engineering leadership, with at least 5+ years at or above the senior manager level
• You bring a strong track record of building, scaling, and leading engineering organizations
• You are an expert in change management, functional leadership, and talent development
• You understand modern software development practices, including Agile, CI/CD, and building distributed systems for scalability and resilience
• You have a strong ability to define and drive technical strategy and organizational outcomes
• You are comfortable with vendor management, RFPs, and optimizing costs within a cost center, even without direct budget ownership
• You possess strong communication skills, with the ability to influence at the team, peer, and executive levels
• You value collaboration, transparency, and operational excellence, always putting the success of the broader organization first

Responsibilities

• Build, lead, and grow a high-performing engineering organization, creating an environment of trust, teamwork, accountability, clear expectations, continuous improvement, and success
• Invest in the careers of engineering managers and senior engineers through coaching, mentorship, timely feedback, delegation, and providing stretch opportunities
• Form strong cross-functional partnerships across Product, Data Science, Finance, Styling Operations, Customer Support, and Mobile
• Develop and execute a technical and organizational strategy focused on scalability, experimentation, and client experience improvements
• Lead change management efforts, influencing how teams and leaders adapt to new processes, structures, and business needs
• Participate in technical design discussions, providing guidance on architecture and ensuring systems are scalable, reliable, and aligned with business goals
• Directly manage stakeholder relationships, ensuring engineering teams are tightly aligned with business partners without heavy reliance on program management intermediaries
• Think strategically and define, measure, and drive organizational metrics to track success and continuous improvement
• Lead the decision on build vs buy at a strategic level by building POC and evaluating against long and short term priorities
