Summary
Join NAPAWF as their Director of Finance, overseeing financial strategy, systems, operations, compliance, and team development. This senior leadership role ensures the organization's financial integrity and sustainability, managing a $12M+ budget. You will work closely with the COO, Executive Director, and Board, leading annual budgeting, forecasting, and reporting. Responsibilities include designing and optimizing financial systems, ensuring compliance, and supervising finance staff. The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of nonprofit finance experience, strong leadership skills, and proficiency with financial systems. Responsibilities
- Lead annual budgeting, long-term financial forecasting, and scenario planning to inform strategic decision-making
- Manage monthly and year-end close processes and deliver timely financial reports with variance analysis and insights
- Monitor organizational performance against budget and recommend adjustments to strategy or spending as needed
- Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Team on resource allocation, organizational priorities, and financial sustainability
- Partner with Development and Program teams on grant and contract budgeting, donor reporting, and funding alignment
- Oversee cash flow projections and management, ensuring adequate liquidity for operations and reserves planning
- Develop dashboards and KPI tools to increase visibility into organizational and departmental financial health
- Design, implement, and optimize financial systems, tools, and workflows to ensure efficiency and accountability
- Maintain and refine the chart of accounts, cost centers, and grant tracking processes to meet funder and organizational needs
- Ensure organizational compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), IRS regulations, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws
- Lead preparation and successful completion of external financial audits and tax filings (Form 990, 990-T, etc.)
- Monitor lobbying compliance and support legal obligations related to C3 and C4 structures
- Coordinate with legal counsel and risk advisors to maintain appropriate insurance coverage, risk policies, and financial protections
- Ensure timely reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, including bank, credit card, receivables, and payables
- Directly supervise finance staff and contractors; define roles and assess future staffing needs as the team evolves
- Develop and deliver internal training to non-finance staff to increase understanding of financial procedures, grant compliance, and budget monitoring
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture centered on equity, transparency, and learning
- Facilitate regular team meetings and quarterly check-ins to align priorities, evaluate progress, and strengthen cohesion
- Create and implement internal performance benchmarks and KPIs for the finance team
- Serve as a key liaison with the Board Finance and Audit Committee, preparing meeting materials and presenting updates
- Support organization-wide strategic initiatives such as systems transitions, equity-centered budgeting, and sustainability planning
- Participate in organization-wide risk assessments and business continuity planning
- Lead finance integration for mergers, fiscal sponsorships, or major programmatic expansions, if applicable
- Ensure financial due diligence and review for all major contracts, leases, MOUs, and partnerships
- Focuses on Strategic Impact – Develops and executes strategies that align with the organization’s mission and long-term goals, ensuring meaningful outcomes for NAPAWF’s community and stakeholders
- Demonstrates Emotional Intelligence – Builds and maintains positive, collaborative relationships across teams and with external partners, fostering an inclusive, mission-driven culture
- Acts as a Committed NAPAWF Steward – Upholds and advances NAPAWF’s values and mission in decision-making, resource management, and external representation

Preferred Qualifications
- 7–10 years of progressive nonprofit finance experience, ideally in C3/C4 organizations with $8M+ budgets
- CPA preferred but not required
- Deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, restricted funding, and compliance regulations
- Experience in gathering, evaluating, presenting, and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated success in audit preparation, financial reporting, and cross-functional financial leadership
- Proficiency with financial systems (Sage Intacct preferred) and Excel; strong technology orientation required
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to work between the detail and the big picture, especially in the finance context
- Capacity to set priorities, handle multiple deadlines, and respond to multiple customers/audiences
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly
- Proven ability to lead teams by establishing clear goals, assigning responsibilities effectively, and evaluating performance to drive results
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with a collaborative approach
