Engineering Manager, ML Engineering

Join SmarterDx, a clinical AI company, as a highly technical Engineering Manager to lead a senior team building its ML Platform and Ecosystem. This fully remote US-based role requires accountability for team performance (velocity, quality, operations, hiring, retention, growth, well-being), fostering a positive team culture, and collaborating with data science and machine learning research to define the ML ecosystem strategy. You will design, build, and launch new ML capabilities, champion MLOps and LLMOps, and support the production platform. The ideal candidate possesses extensive ML/software engineering experience, including MLOps expertise and agile team leadership. Requirements

• 8+ years of ML engineering or software engineering experience
• 5+ years delivering MLOps capabilities
• Experience leading software teams to deliver quality technical solutions
• Experience providing tooling and capabilities for a data science and machine learning department
• Expertise running an agile process (preferably Kanban) for a team and fluency with the agile toolkit
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience in machine learning libraries (Pytorch, Tensorflow)
• Experience with deploying and managing ML models in production environments, including familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or similar technologies
• Experience with end-to-end machine learning project lifecycle, from data collection and model training to deployment and monitoring
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working at startups, especially in the health tech space
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience

Responsibilities

• Be accountable for all aspects of the team’s performance including velocity of feature delivery, quality, operational excellence, hiring, retention, professional growth, and well-being
• Foster a culture of clarity, alignment, and confidence to help the team deliver on goals effectively
• Work with the Sr Managers of Data Science and Machine Learning Research to drive out the strategy, roadmap, and architecture machine learning ecosystem
• Design, build, and launch new ML capabilities to improve the overall quality and experience of software development at SmarterDx
• Champion MLOps and LLMOps practices across the organization
• Support our platform in production

Preferred Qualifications

• You're a former startup founder, or have managed a team at a fast-growing startup
• 3+ years as an engineering manager
• Experience supporting data engineering tools like Airflow and dbt
• Experience with Snowflake
• Deployment of LLM systems into Production environments
