Environmental Monitor

Summary

Join Canacre's team as an Environmental Monitor, conducting environmental inspections and monitoring during energy development project construction. Coordinate daily compliance activities, conduct wildlife monitoring, and ensure mitigation measures are implemented. Inspect erosion and sediment control, oversee soil handling, and develop corrective action plans. Act as an environmental lead for the construction team, explaining regulations to personnel, and verifying environmentally sensitive areas are properly marked. Complete daily and monthly reports, review field reports, and support permit preparation. Coordinate with regulatory bodies as needed.

Requirements

• Post-secondary degree/diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field of study
• 5+ years professional experience as a Biologist, Environmental Monitor, Environmental Inspector, Environmental Planner, or related role
• Experienced leading field work, and coordinating with various field teams
• Strong verbal and written communication skills – data collection and interpretation, technical report writing, regulatory permit applications, client communications, etc
• Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations and best management practices
• Experience developing summary reports related to construction activities and/or compliance status
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with minimal supervision
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated and highly organized with strong problem-solving skills
• Ability to build strong, lasting relationships with key stakeholders
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Valid Driver’s License, with ability to maintain insurability under the company’s insurance carrier

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily inspections of construction activities and attend construction meetings
• Conduct migratory bird nest sweeps and other wildlife monitoring activities, as required
• Ensure implementation of mitigation measures from environmental management documents, permit conditions, and best management practices
• Inspect implemented erosion and sediment control measures and provide recommendations for repair and amendment, when needed
• Oversee and direct soils handling activities (e.g., topsoil stripping)
• Develop and implement corrective action plans and mitigation measures for any identified environmental issues or hazards
• Act as an environmental lead for the construction team
• Act as a resource to construction personnel and explain environmental regulations and how they are applied in the field
• Verify that environmentally sensitive areas are properly marked and flagged before work is done in the area
• Coordinate daily with construction team to discuss upcoming construction activities that are existing, potential problem areas and areas of concern
• Inspect areas of concern and make appropriate recommendations to construction personnel, as required
• Complete daily and monthly environmental reports, including nest sweep reports
• Review field reports for consistency and accuracy
• Support the preparation of environmental permits, when required
• Coordinate with regulatory bodies, when required

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience related to pipeline, transmission line or renewable energy project construction would be an asset
• Experience and knowledge related to other biophysical disciplines, such as wetlands, vegetation, aquatics, etc. would be an asset
• Designation or certification related to erosion and sediment control, such as CPESC or CESSWI, would be an asset
• Experience with ESRI products, such as ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123 and Field Maps would be an asset
