Summary
Join Skylight, a digital consultancy, as an epidemiologist to improve public health digital infrastructure. Collaborate with teams to ensure information systems align with public health practices, providing subject matter expertise and a systematic approach. You will help ensure evolving features, user experience, and data models align with public health policies and data needs of health departments. Work with stakeholders to align system workflows with public health policies and practices. Identify user needs and system issues, and contribute to a collaborative leadership group. Requirements
- Extensive experience in public health practice, including past employment history at the state, tribal, local, and territorial health department level
- MPH, MSPH, or PhD in Epidemiology, or MD
- Familiarity with integrated disease surveillance systems and case investigation workflows
- Comfort with ambiguity, iterative problem solving, and helping teams prioritize the most meaningful next step
- Experience navigating and adapting to evolving public health policies, data requirements, and real-world constraints
- Ability to work successfully within a professional services environment (e.g., can communicate effectively with clients)
- A passion for creating better public outcomes through great government services
- A mindset and work approach that aligns with our core values
- Ability to travel for work from time to time

Responsibilities
- Act as an internal epidemiology strategist, collaborating with technical, product, and research leads to represent the lived experiences of epidemiologists and disease investigators in information system design, development, and implementation decisions
- Partner with CDC and state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) public health stakeholders to align system workflows and functionality with evolving public health policies, practices, and data requirements
- Ensure the system supports real-world case investigation and surveillance workflows across a range of conditions and programs
- Partner with Skylight public health informaticians to provide subject matter expertise on integrating core public health data streams (e.g., electronic laboratory reporting [ELR], electronic case reporting [eCR], syndromic surveillance, vital records, immunizations)
- Help identify which user needs and system issues to tackle first β and how to approach them iteratively, using principles from human-centered design
- Contribute to a collaborative, cross-contract leadership group and help ensure public health voices are represented at every level
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience applying human-centered design principles to public health or health IT work
- Recognized reputation across the public health community for public health practice excellence
- Prior experience working in the civic tech space
- Experience working in a remote team environment
