Summary

Join Newsela as a Content Leveler and contribute to creating accessible educational content for diverse student readers. You will adapt reading levels of articles to produce four versions at lower reading levels, ensuring grade-appropriate content and accuracy. This role requires experience in writing and editing for diverse audiences, along with a background in publishing, journalism, or education. Prior experience in EdTech or similar organizations is beneficial. Compensation is on a per-task basis. Newsela is a rapidly growing EdTech company committed to providing engaging and accessible learning resources for K-12 students.

Requirements

  • Have experience as a former editor, journalist and/or writer for a publishing company, particularly publishers with which Newsela has a partnership
  • Have experience in other EdTech, tech or media organizations
  • Have experience writing and editing for diverse audiences
  • Have experience writing about a wide array of topics
  • Understand how to think and write empathetically and with a unified voice
  • Have the ability to understand and write in Newsela’s language
  • Have familiarity with Newsela products

Responsibilities

  • Adapt the reading level of original articles to create four different versions at lower reading levels, making them accessible to a wider audience
  • Remain conscientious of grade-appropriate content, and consider the complexity of vocabulary, sentence structure and sentence length for each level being adapted
  • May participate in projects involving the identification and assignment of instructional standards tags within Newsela articles and content standards tagging & content taxonomy projects
  • Read and write with close attention, monitoring original articles for any mistakes and inaccuracies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have preferred experience and/or education specific to subject matter including one or more of the following: Science: field and/or lab research, degree in STEM, degree in science writing/journalism
  • Have preferred experience and/or education specific to subject matter including one or more of the following: OR secondary degree experience in education, such as a teacher or teaching assistant in Science
  • Have additional knowledge of one or more specific content areas (Social Studies, ELA, Science)
  • Have experience in education or childcare spaces
