Summary
Join NPR's Office of General Counsel as a legal extern and contribute to a mission-driven organization. This part-time externship, running from September 8th, 2025, to December 5th, 2025, offers invaluable experience in copyright law, fair use, and audio licensing. You will assist senior counsel in evaluating copyright issues, conducting research, making fair use determinations, drafting agreements, and managing rights. The position requires enrollment in an accredited law degree program, completion of a copyright law course, and a strong understanding of copyright principles and fair use. While prior licensing experience is preferred, it's not mandatory. The externship is remote-permitted and offers course credit or a school-sponsored stipend.
Requirements
- Must be a current student in an accredited law degree program
- Candidates must have taken a course in copyright law or equivalent and be well-versed in the principles of fair use
Responsibilities
- Evaluate copyright issues in audio content (and occasional video content)
- Research copyright issues
- Make fair use determinations
- Draft and/or organize permissions agreements and otherwise assess legal aspects of proposed licensing agreements
- Assist with Rights Management issues
