Illustration Intern

Join Slate's art department as a paid intern and collaborate with design and editorial teams to create visuals for our online magazine and podcasts. You will work on a fast-paced team, primarily remotely, contributing to various projects. Ideal candidates possess a strong interest in journalism and storytelling and are pursuing a career in editorial design, illustration, or photo editing. This internship offers a chance to build a portfolio of impressive work. The role involves compiling visual research, assisting with photo research, collaborating with editors and writers, and producing final artwork. A cover letter, resume, and portfolio samples are required for application.

Requirements

• Be open to and enthusiastic about collaboration and critical discussion of your work
• Bring new ideas to the table
• Possess strong written communication skills
• Submit a brief cover letter explaining why you're right for the job
• Submit a résumé
• Submit three to five examples of past illustration work from your portfolio

Responsibilities

• Compile visual research for feature story art
• Assist in photo research for photo, illustration, and photo-illustration work
• Work hands-on with editors and writers across all departments of coverage
• Brainstorm, sketch, revise, and critically review with the art team
• Produce final published artwork on a fast-paced schedule
