Summary
Join Xometry as a Lead Application Engineer, Injection Molding and become a critical link between customers, the sales team, and engineering efforts. You will support various industries by leveraging your injection molding expertise to analyze customer requests, provide design-for-manufacturing feedback, and develop custom solutions. Lead quoting activities for custom manufacturing jobs, encompassing prototypes, low-volume, and production runs. Analyze engineering models and drawings to define optimal manufacturing processes. Estimate manufacturing costs and source materials from external suppliers. Mentor junior application engineers and serve as a technical escalation point. This role requires strong analytical and communication skills and experience in CNC machining and manufacturing engineering.
Requirements
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in CNC machining, manufacturing engineering, or technical quoting
- Strong background in CNC machining technologies including: 3/4/5-axis milling
- CNC turning
- Swiss machines
- Live tooling lathes
- Basic knowledge of custom tooling
- Familiarity with secondary operations: welding, grinding, EDM, finishing, and basic assembly
- Proficient in interpreting and modifying CAD models and technical drawings
- Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Strong analytical skills for evaluating DFM issues and proposing optimized manufacturing strategies
- Proven ability to collaborate with machinists, quality engineers, and technical sales
- Experience sourcing materials and negotiating with suppliers
- Comfortable working with quoting software, ERP systems, and engineering databases
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- English C1 is required
Responsibilities
- Lead quoting activities for custom manufacturing jobs, including prototype, low-volume, and production runs
- Analyze 2D/3D engineering models and drawings to define optimal manufacturing processes and sequence of operations
- Provide DFM (Design for Manufacturability) feedback to customers and collaborate with internal teams on complex part requirements
- Estimate manufacturing costs, considering materials, tooling, setup times, machine run times, inspection, and secondary processes
- Source materials and services from external suppliers, optimizing for cost, lead time, and quality
- Consolidate internal and external costs to produce accurate, timely, and competitive quotes
- Review and assess customer RFQs to determine material needs, process plans, and production feasibility
- Support quoting tools/process improvements and maintain daily quote log and KPI tracking
- Mentor junior application engineers and support knowledge sharing across the team
- Serve as a technical escalation point during quoting and order planning phases
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous leadership or mentoring experience within an engineering or quoting team
- Background in digital manufacturing platforms or on-demand production services
- Experience implementing or optimizing quoting workflows and tools
- Knowledge of PLM, MES, or other manufacturing data systems
- Customer-service oriented with excellent communication skills, capable of interacting politely and enthusiastically with both customers and coworkers
