Principal Mechanical Engineer

Summary

Join Toast's Hardware team as the Mechanical Lead Architect and oversee mechanical engineering design initiatives, from concept to ongoing support. Lead and mentor junior team members, collaborate with internal and external teams (JDMs and ODMs), and foster strong partner relationships. Design cutting-edge POS devices exceeding customer expectations, promoting knowledge sharing, and working with cross-functional teams. This role requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, 10+ years of relevant experience, proficiency in various design and manufacturing processes, and experience with NPI. International and domestic travel is required (up to 25%). Requirements

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in the development of POS, Payment, Android or comparable devices
• Proficiency in working with injection molded components, castings, sheet metal parts, glass lenses, die-cut components, and electromechanical devices such as LCD panels, speakers, microphones, switches, and mechanical mechanisms
• Familiarity with various decoration techniques, including painting, printing, plating, and polishing
• Practical experience in prototype development, debugging, functional verification, and manufacturing support
• The ability to identify root causes of design, manufacturability, or production challenges to enhance designs and facilitate successful mass production
• Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) team, Operation team, Manufacturing team, Quality team and Supply Chain team
• Full experience of 3D CAD, CREO with Database management by Windchill
• Travel ( internationally and domestically ) is a must, up to 25% of work hours

Responsibilities

• Oversee the Mechanical Engineering design initiatives, encompassing the conceptualization, architecture, design, development, new product introduction (NPI), and ongoing engineering support for our products
• Provide leadership and mentorship to junior team members while working closely with other essential teams at Toast and with JDM and ODM partners
• Foster strong relationships with our JDM/OEM partners
• Review design documents and concepts
• Facilitate discussions among teams including JDM and ODM partners
• Collaborate on roadmaps with architectural and product stakeholders
• Offer technical guidance to fellow team members
• Mentor and Coach fellow individual contributors to enhance their professional and technical skills
• Design and create cutting-edge devices that will exceed customer expectations
• Promote the exchange of knowledge throughout the engineering department including the development of functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional testing procedures
• Work in partnership with cross-functional teams to produce exceptional devices
