Job description

We build tools used by thousands of development teams around the world, including the BBC, Shopify, Adobe, and, of course, ourselves. We are a revenue-positive startup that cares about the details. We work together to do some of the best work of our careers and only ship work we are genuinely proud of. We’re on a mission to safeguard all of the world’s pixels, but we need your help.

We want someone like you to work on our cloud-based capture system and help with improving the system design for the Chromatic product, taking features from ideation to production. We seek someone passionate about building scalable, reliable backend systems that power delightful customer experiences. While your focus is on backend development, you’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate across the stack. Our capture system is written in Go and Typescript, running on top of AWS Fargate and Lambda. You’ll be part of a team that loves building APIs and systems that customers can trust and rely on.

This is the perfect job for someone who is willing to investigate complex problems and devise simple, high-quality, and delightful solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems in our Go and TypeScript stack.

  • Comfortable with cloud-based technologies like Fargate, Lambda, and RabbitMQ.

  • Work on some of our open source projects, such as the Chromatic CLI.

  • Design, develop, and refine APIs that serve internal and customer-facing products.

  • Work closely with the product team and full-stack engineers to help refine specifications and provide technical guidance.

  • Collaborate with other engineering teams at the company to take full-stack features to production.

  • Monitor and continuously improve our systems to maintain a quality standard and effectively respond to operational incidents.

  • You will participate in the engineering team’s support rotation. Because of our globally distributed team, this rotation is primarily during business hours.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of real-world experience building backend systems for web applications.

  • 3+ years of experience writing production APIs (bonus points for GraphQL).

  • Experience using Go, TypeScript, and Node.JS (It’s a plus if you have experience with other languages and Backend frameworks, too).

  • Experience with distributed computing tools such as Docker, Fargate and messaging systems.

  • Excellent technical communication skills and enthusiasm for writing things down.

  • Passionate about testing and experience using test-driven development.

  • Prefers simple solutions and designs over complex ones and has a good intuition for what will last and scale.

  • Bonus: Experience with an IaC tool like Terraform, and general AWS operations experience and knowledge.

  • Bonus: Experience with Visual Regression Testing and developing components in isolation (e.g., used Storybook, etc.).
