This hybrid role, based in Minneapolis, Austin, Chicago, or the San Francisco Bay Area, involves leading and supporting a coding team, ensuring accurate and compliant Medicare & Medicaid risk adjustment coding processes. You will educate clinicians and staff on proper coding practices, conduct audits, drive operational excellence, and contribute to strategic initiatives. This position requires 5 years of experience in medical coding, healthcare education, or a related field, with a strong focus on Medicare risk adjustment, as well as CRC certification.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in medical coding, healthcare education, or a related field, with a strong focus on Medicare risk adjustment
  • Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC) certification
  • In-depth knowledge of Medicare & Medicaid risk adjustment methodology and coding guidelines
  • Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Knowledge of healthcare compliance, regulations, and billing practices
  • Proactive problem-solving capabilities and comfort working in a dynamic, evolving healthcare environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and guide cross-functional teams

Responsibilities

  • Lead and Support the Coding Team: Manage the day-to-day operations of the coding team, including overseeing schedules, time off requests, performance concerns, and general support needs
  • Conduct Coding Audits: Regularly audit team membersโ€™ coding work to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to risk adjustment and documentation standards
  • Drive Operational Excellence: Ensure team performance aligns with department OKRs and quality benchmarks. Promote accountability through clear expectations and consistent follow-through
  • Ensure Process Adherence: Maintain and enforce standardized workflows and procedures. Ensure all processes are clearly documented, consistently followed, and updated as needed
  • Train and Develop Team Members: Provide onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development for coders. Offer coaching and mentorship to elevate team skills and engagement
  • Escalate and Resolve Issues: Identify and escalate operational, cross-functional, or performance-related issues that impact team success
  • Contribute to Strategic Initiatives: Participate in strategic planning discussions and serve as a subject matter expert for initiatives focused on improving coding workflows and performance
  • Embrace Flexibility and Ownership: Take on additional tasks or lead workstreams as assigned to support process improvement and organizational growth

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional AAPC or AHIMA certification (CPC, RHIA, RHIT, CDIP etc.)
  • Approved instructor certification through AAPC or AHIMA
  • Experience with risk adjustment technology solutions and risk adjustment vendors
  • Previous experience building from the ground up on a small, fast-paced team
