Requirements

  • Undergrad required; Masters or PhD within an engineering discipline preferred
  • 5+ years of automotive, robotics, aerospace or related industry experience
  • Experience with building a strong safety case for autonomous vehicles
  • Experience with using simulation and real world testing to make readiness decisions
  • Experience with methods and standards such as STPA, SOTIF (ISO 21448) and / or UL 4600
  • Strong fundamentals in mathematics, engineering and physics
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts or data in a simple-yet-accurate manner
  • Excellent data analysis skills with modern tools such as Python or Matlab
  • Open-minded and collaborative leader who is eager to provide guidance and has the willingness to help others
  • Passionate about self-driving technologies, solving hard problems, and creating innovative solutions

Responsibilities

  • Lead and own the creation, documentation, alignment and execution of several safety framework methods that we use at Waabi to make our driverless autonomy readiness decisions
  • Act as a central point of contact at Waabi for all matters related to safety and readiness metrics for driverless autonomy operations and communicate updates, progress and potential roadblocks to stakeholders at all levels
  • Help drive Waabi’s safety culture through application of safety standards and methodologies in your area of responsibility across all supporting teams at Waabi including Systems Engineering, Hardware and Software
  • Define all necessary improvements for our highly realistic simulator to effectively verify all driving behaviors under all required conditions and work with other teams at Waabi to get these improvements designed and implemented
  • Contribute to the overall concept for how we document and determine our driverless autonomy readiness decisions so that it is thorough and easy to understand
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance Waabi’s safety framework methods, look for novel approaches, identify and apply lessons learned and ensure a detailed and comprehensive documentation that is easily accessible
  • Implement tools and methodologies to streamline and automate the safety framework methods where applicable
  • Work with external partners on gathering data and information related to driving behaviors of trucks as well as on supporting a strong safety case for the complete self-driving system
  • As we grow, lead a team of experienced and skilled systems and/or safety engineers and ensure they stay hungry to grow in their roles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in launching a driverless product
  • Experience in leading small teams of systems and/or safety engineers
  • Experience in the automotive self driving industry
  • Experience building software systems from scratch
  • Experience in robotics or machine learning
  • Proficiency with data mining, mathematics, and statistical analysis
