Summary

The job is for a Senior Data Engineer at Underdog, a rapidly growing sports gaming company. The role involves designing performant, flexible, and low-technical-debt solutions using BigQuery and DBT, collaborating with various teams, and staying updated with the company's data models and processes.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience writing SQL and working with databases in a Data Architecture, Analytics Engineering, or Data Engineering capacity
  • At least 3 years of experience using BigQuery
  • At least 2 years of experience using DBT for data transformations and architecture development

Responsibilities

  • Design models in DBT for Underdog’s reporting layer
  • Work cross-functionally with Data Scientists, Product Managers, and other stakeholders to understand data needs
  • Create performant, flexible, and low-technical-debt solutions using BigQuery and DBT
  • Minimize technical debt, make efficient use of BQ resources, keep data fresh, adhere to Underdog best practices, and allow stakeholders to access the data they need
  • Create and maintain tests and documentation about the reporting layer inside the DBT models
  • Perform validation and data integrity checks on new datasets and load procedures before delivery to stakeholders
  • Stay abreast of all of Underdog's Fantasy data models, processes, business rules, contest rules, and product functionality
  • Assist Data Scientists in developing analytics datasets to meet the needs of the business
  • Meet with stakeholders as needed to discuss existing and upcoming data projects and deliverables
  • Communicate continuously about progress, blockers, and anything else related to assigned tasks
  • Document and report issues with source data and follow up with owners on resolution/path forward
  • Use Jira proactively to manage tasks and deliverables; participate in regular sprint planning and retrospective meetings
  • Periodically present your work at team lunch-and-learn meetings
  • Proactively look for ways we can continuously improve our architecture in the reporting layer, as well as our team processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or strong familiarity with BI tools such as Sigma or Looker
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT concepts and best practices
