Summary

Join Back Market's Cloud Infrastructure team as a Senior Engineering Manager to lead and mentor a team of 8 experienced engineers. You will collaborate with colleagues in the CloudOps Group, handle operational responsibilities, treat infrastructure as a product, prioritize and evolve the team's roadmap, and take ownership of cost-efficiency and sustainability initiatives. The ideal candidate will have proven experience managing infrastructure/platform engineering teams in an international environment, a strong understanding of cloud infrastructure tooling (especially GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, and ideally Crossplane), and a commitment to cost efficiency and sustainability. The role involves leading, mentoring, and empowering the team, fostering a culture of trust and continuous improvement. Success will be measured by the balance between managing operations and building the platform. This is a great opportunity to step into an established role within a growing company.

Requirements

  • You bring proven experience managing infrastructure/platform engineering teams in an international technology-driven environment
  • You create a team environment where team members feel like they belong and are supported to do their best work
  • You have a strong understanding of cloud infrastructure tooling, especially Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes (GKE), Terraform, and ideally Crossplane
  • You understand infrastructure delivery as products , measuring success through adoption, clear metrics, and satisfaction—not merely as technical output
  • You feel strongly about cost efficiency, sustainability , and actively reducing environmental footprint from your team's decisions
  • You’re comfortable coordinating incident responses, handling complex operational environments, dynamic backlogs, and on-call rotations
  • You are pragmatic and data-driven
  • You prioritize people and relationships , showing servant leadership qualities, empathy, and excellent coaching and communication skills
  • You’re fluent and comfortable working professionally in English

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and empower a highly skilled cloud infrastructure team of 8 engineers , fostering a culture of trust, autonomy, and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate closely with your colleagues in our CloudOps Group, including SRE and Engineering Productivity teams, partnering actively with Staff Engineers and stakeholders across Back Market to build relevant, adopted infrastructure services
  • Handle operational responsibilities gracefully : coordinating incidents, maintaining calm, and managing an effective and robust on-call rotation
  • Treat infrastructure as a product , developing clear metrics-driven approaches to measuring service usage and satisfaction. Examples of our tailored internal services include:Custom Kubernetes resources for provisioning Buckets, Key-Value stores, databases, and protected public endpoints or secure privilege-escalation tooling to support engineers during on-call incidents
  • Prioritize and evolve your team’s roadmap iteratively , based on feedback, direct observations, and clear adoption metrics. The key success will be the balance between managing operations and the platform we build
  • Take ownership of cost-efficiency and sustainability initiatives within infrastructure , actively reducing Back Market’s engineering costs and carbon footprint
  • Embrace iteration and experimentation , supporting your team in rapidly learning from both successes and failures
  • Help the team, the platform, and the technical organization to grow and evolve on our existing toolset built around Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Kubernetes (GKE), Cloudflare, Terraform, Crossplane, Backstage, custom CLI, etc

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity or experience with Golang
  • Experience working closely with Performance optimization and developer experience
  • Previous use of or exposure to engineer-focused developer portals such as Backstage
  • Understanding of regulatory or compliance considerations (like GDPR, PCI-DSS, ISO27001, etc.)
