Summary

Join Bedrock, a company operationalizing Earth's largest ocean exploration mission, as a Senior Mechanical Engineer. You will contribute to the design of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and subsea equipment, playing a crucial role in mapping and understanding the ocean floor. This position demands expertise in mechanical design, engineering analysis, and collaboration within a cross-functional team. You will be responsible for the mechanical design efforts on new AUV systems and supporting equipment. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in mechanical or ocean engineering, proven experience in designing complex systems, and a passion for ocean exploration and environmental sustainability. This role requires hands-on experience and collaboration with engineers and operators. Bedrock offers a flexible remote work policy when not requiring on-site presence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 5+ years of experience in the engineering process, including concept development, analysis, design, drawing, integration and testing of complex mechanical and/or ocean deployed systems
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as Inventor, FEA, CFD, and MATLAB
  • Proficiency to independently perform engineering analysis, such as structural, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, machine design, etc
  • Experience with integrating with electronics assemblies including printed circuit board (PCB) design and harness routing
  • Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) methodologies
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing, laser cutting, and CNC machining
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Familiarity with production documentation, such as work instructions, process maps, and control plans
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong hands-on build, fabrication, assembly, test experience willing to roll up your sleeves to deliver and complete the design through field testing
  • Must be local to the Bay Area or willing to relocate

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the mechanical design efforts on new AUV systems and the supporting equipment needed to unlock the huge logistical savings of a disruptive technology in an emerging industry
  • Collaborate with all team members to develop new ideas and solutions that will help us achieve our mission
  • Technically manage projects of small scope

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with subsea equipment or marine systems including launch and recovery
  • Experience with robotics systems
  • Experience with automation and robotics in a manufacturing setting
  • Familiarity with programming or scripting languages, such as Python, C++, or MATLAB
