Senior Staff Software Engineer

Summary

Join Affirm's Money Movement Engineering team as a Senior Staff Software Engineer! This hybrid role, based near our Chicago office, involves setting long-term technical strategy for the group, collaborating across the engineering organization, and ensuring operational excellence for systems processing over $100 million daily. You will take ownership of the group’s operations and availability, develop team talent, and leverage your 10+ years of experience in backend system design and development. Ideal candidates possess financial experience and expertise in distributed systems. Requirements

• Have 10+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin
• Have an extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
• This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Responsibilities

• Set long-term technical strategy for the group on a year+ time scale. This includes architecture, coding practices, and operating principles
• Collaborate across the engineering org in the product development lifecycle, working with the many Financial Platforms stakeholders, including Product Management, Accounting, Capital Markets, and others
• Take ownership of the group’s operations and availability by ensuring teams are following best practices and thinking long-term about system health
• Help develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example

Preferred Qualifications

• Have some financial (fintech/bank/accounting) experience and be comfortable talking about how money is handled at scale
• Have experience with batch systems and working with large datasets
• Thrive in ambiguity, and are comfortable moving from low level language idioms all the way to the architecture of large systems to understand how they work
• Your growth and impact trajectory demonstrates that you have mastered gathering and iterating on feedback from your engineering and cross-functional peers
• Have strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with our global engineering team
