Senior Staff Software Engineer

Summary

Join Samsara's Fleet Safety team as a Senior Staff Software Engineer and become a technical leader, guiding the team's architecture to support demanding features and customer needs. You will work on critical projects, leveraging AI and data analysis to improve driver safety through web and mobile workflows. This remote position requires expertise in large-scale enterprise software applications and a minimum of 15 years of software engineering experience, including 8 years in an architect or leadership role. You will lead the design and implementation of advanced features, ensuring alignment with Samsara's technical vision. The role involves mentoring junior engineers and recruiting top talent. Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering
• 15+ years of experience as a software engineer building customer-facing applications with at least 8 of those years in an architect or leadership role and 6+ years of experience leading cross-organization projects
• Entrepreneurial experience
• Stellar programming/coding fundamentals
• Expertise working on large-scale enterprise software applications

Responsibilities

• Level-up Samsara’s application of emerging AI technologies and set the pace for development, aiding the team in finding clever ways to simplify problems
• Understand not just the technical and product capabilities but also the nuances of the businesses they support. Help to understand and balance conflicting stakeholder objectives while simultaneously building trust and demonstrating empathy with their customers’ needs
• Lead the definition, design, architecture quality, implementation, and delivery of the most advanced, most difficult, most cross-cutting, and/or most ambiguous challenges spanning across our fleet safety orgnazition to enable fast-paced product innovation. You may own one or more critical components
• Ensure that the organizations with Samsara are aligned to a coherent technical vision and deliver systems that fit well together
• Exert influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness. Hold peers and teams to a high bar
• Be considered an authority on technical issues by both the technical and business communities and be frequently consulted when making difficult trade-off decisions. Drive awareness about the impact and consequences of technical decisions on the business
• Demonstrate significant innovation, creativity, and judgment when solving challenging problems
• Identify future skills needed across your organization and advocate for the development and/or acquisition of those skills to senior leaders. Scout top talent and recruit them to Samsara
• Actively mentor staff level engineers. Develop and institutionalize best practices
• Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science/Engineering
• Experience in applying Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence to real-world applications
• Technical mastery in Go, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C/C++, or other similar languages
