Software Engineer

Summary

Join Wirecutter, a New York Times company, as a Storytelling Software Engineer and help build engaging web experiences to reach new audiences. This remote position, with the option to work in NYC offices, involves collaborating with a team of engineers, product managers, designers, and editors. You will be responsible for writing, testing, and deploying code using various languages and frameworks, including CSS (SCSS), Javascript/React, and more. The role requires strong front-end development experience and a commitment to journalistic independence. You will participate in agile development processes and contribute to code reviews. Requirements

• 3+ years experience with front-end development
• 3+ years experience programming in Javascript
• 2+ years experience applying software principles, application architecture, data structures, coding conventions, and security practices

Responsibilities

• Write, test, debug, and deploy code across a variety of languages and frameworks, particularly CSS(SCSS) and Javascript/React
• Work across the different phases of the software development lifecycle including design, building, QA testing, deploying, documenting, debugging, and supporting features
• Participate in stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives at the agile team level and up
• Perform code reviews with helpful and meaningful feedback for your teammates
• Research, document, note trade-offs and recommend potential solutions around future product features
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years experience developing features that require integration with WordPress or Drupal
• 2+ years experience with distributed or hybrid teams
• 2+ years experience with CSS, design systems, accessibility, performant UI, and SEO
