Summary
Join Timmons Group as a Substation Protection & Control Electrical Engineer in our Charlotte, NC office (remote candidates considered)! You will participate in the detailed design of medium to high-voltage utility substations, developing detailed designs and drawings. Responsibilities include analyzing system faults, integrating automation systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and mentoring junior engineers. Occasional travel is required. This position offers the opportunity to work on diverse substation projects across the country.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in utility substation design
- Experience in 15kV through 138kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards
- Experience performing P&C design in AutoCAD Electrical using relevant design, analysis and documentation using industry standard software
- Ability to manage multiple P & C design projects (brownfield and greenfield projects)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt and apply standard engineering approaches to complex challenges
Responsibilities
- Participate in the detailed design of medium to high-voltage utility substations
- Develop detailed design, including one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit, and cable sizing/routing, and selection of substation P&C equipment
- Translate written scope documents into comprehensive P&C substation design and drawing package using good engineering judgment and industry/client standards with minimal oversight
- Analyze system faults and disturbances to optimize protection strategies using standard industry software (ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, etc.)
- Integrate substation automation systems with SCADA and communication protocols
- Ensure all designs and installations comply with relevant industry standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE)
- Support project management activities, including scheduling, budgeting, and coordinating with clients and stakeholders
- Mentor junior engineers and designers in protection and control principles and practices
- Occasional travel required
Preferred Qualifications
- EIT Certification / PE registration strongly preferred
- Experience in 230kV through 500kV substation design is a plus
- MicroStation (V8 or newer) or AutoCAD (2016 or newer) is preferred
