Summary

Join Torc, a leader in autonomous driving, and contribute to the advancement of autonomous truck technology. As a Safety Engineer, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the safe testing of autonomous heavy trucks. Your responsibilities will include monitoring and improving testing procedures, providing data analysis for safety cases, and supporting accident response processes. You will also review engineering designs and coordinate with stakeholders to integrate test safety into all development and operations. This position requires a Master's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field with specific experience in safety engineering and autonomous vehicle testing. The position is located in Blacksburg, VA, but remote work within the U.S. is eligible.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering or related with 2 years’ (with Master’s) experience as a Safety Engineer or related, or alternatively Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering or related with 5 years’ (with Bachelor’s) experience as a Safety Engineer or related
  • Experience must include: System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA)
  • Experience must include: Project management
  • Experience must include: vehicle program management
  • Experience must include: product development life cycle
  • Experience must include: project planning
  • Experience must include: Autonomous Vehicle Verification and Validation Testing
  • Experience must include: Regulatory Testing as per NHTSA & EURONCAP Standards
  • Experience must include: Demonstration of Safe and Proficient usage of AV Testing Tools such as AB Dynamics & OXTS Testing Tools
  • Experience must include: Root Cause Analysis
  • Experience must include: Safety analysis for Operational Procedures around complex AV Testing environments
  • Experience must include: AV Testing Environments Specifications and Requirements
  • Experience must include: ROS, Linux, C++

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Product Development & Fleet Operations teams to monitor, assess, and improve the safe testing of Autonomous Heavy Trucks
  • Support the development and maintenance operational procedures related to testing autonomous vehicles safely
  • Provide data analyses to maintain a safety case for Autonomous Vehicle platforms, including real-time safety support of operational testing
  • Evaluate safety results of tests and develop risk mitigation plans
  • Support the Torc accident and incident response process, mishap investigation, and corrective action plans
  • Review engineering design specifications, test operations procedures, change proposals, deficiency reports, exceptions, and other requests for potential test safety impacts
  • Coordinate and collaborate across stakeholders to ensure test safety is integral to all autonomous development testing and operations
