Summary

Join D2L as the VP, Architecture, reporting to the CTO. You will shape and drive the technical strategy, build proposals for technical investments, and lead a team of architects and engineers. Ensure architectural decisions are sound and effectively implemented. Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritize roadmap items, focusing on architecture and platform advancements. Work with teams onsite and virtually to drive strategy and objectives. Improve web-scale, AWS-first design processes. Provide operational oversight of budgets and costs. Engage with customer leadership to discuss technology vision and needs. Present on architecture and cloud strategy at D2L events and industry panels. Lead and improve the architecture department's work within the company.

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading strategic technical investments at a commercial software company
  • Proven experience as both a people leader and a technical leader
  • Ability to work quickly and precisely with complex technical concepts and principles while driving towards simplicity and effectiveness
  • Ability to balance technical and architectural principles with important business priorities
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud scale application architecture and system architecture
  • Extensive knowledge of modern programming languages and frameworks
  • Extensive knowledge of modern security practices and principles
  • Presenting and collaborating with senior leaders both internally and externally with customers and partners
  • Ability to engage with key customer leadership to discuss technology vision and align with their key needs
  • Practical skills building and deploying complex business application software into a large scale SaaS infrastructure
  • Writing rigorous architectural recommendations
  • Knowledge of AWS services and best practices

Responsibilities

  • Build and drive the D2L technical strategy that supports growth, new capabilities, developer productivity, and product quality
  • Develop rigorous proposals for strategic technical investments
  • Build and grow a strong group of architects and principal engineers
  • Ensure architects and principal engineers provide rigorous and sound feasibility recommendations and initial implementations
  • Work with key stakeholders to drive the roadmap priorities to ensure an operational focus on architecture and platform advances
  • Working with teams onsite (travel) and virtually as needed to help drive strategy and objectives
  • Drive the improvement of web-scale, AWS-first design processes at D2L working with the operational and platform teams
  • Operational oversight of budgets, departmental costs and plans around key investment areas
  • Speaking with key customer leadership, faculty and staff to talk about our technology vision and their key needs and alignment with our vision
  • Speaking about architecture and cloud methodology and strategy at various D2L events or industry panels
  • Provide leadership and strategies around the ongoing improvement of the architecture department and its work within the company
