Summary

Join Pelmorex as a Writer and contribute to The Weather Network's digital platforms by sourcing, writing, editing, and posting weather, news, and video content. You will work closely with the Video and Editorial team and freelance resources to generate engaging content for audiences. This on-call position requires flexibility and the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with responsibilities including pitching, writing, and publishing original content, monitoring analytics, conducting interviews, and representing writing content at meetings. You will also be responsible for building, publishing, and maintaining Storm Centre and Weather Highlights during active weather events.

Requirements

  • Excellent news judgment
  • Ability to write headlines, choose photos/videos and package content quickly and accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Familiarity with CP Style
  • Team player with the ability to follow direction, as well as work without supervision
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and effectively prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work a flexible work week - weekend and night work involved
  • Excellent writing and researching skills
  • Good understanding of website and publishing trends
  • Strong computer knowledge with page building skills

  • Organized and meticulous about details
  • Flexible (shift work is required)

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, source and verify digital content for publishing that aligns with The Weather Network’s editorial content strategy
  • Write and publish original content to The Weather Network digital platforms
  • Communicate with the News Assignment Editor and Met. Assignment Editor to receive assignments and coordinate publishing priorities
  • Source and post content from third-party providers that fits with content strategy
  • Monitor analytics and coordinate with the Optimization Lead to ensure daily objectives are being met
  • Conduct interviews with sources and experts
  • Geo-target news articles (namely weather content)
  • Represent writing content at daily huddles, monthly writers’ meeting, and any Video and Editorial meetings as necessary
  • Build, publish and maintain Storm Centre and Weather Highlights during active weather with the assistance of the Met. Assignment Editor on shift
  • Publish news articles and updates to social media (Twitter and Facebook) on evenings and weekends and/or upon request from Social Media Lead

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the weather, the environment and global geography
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems (ex: WordPress, Contentful, Tridion)
  • Understanding of multiple digital formats and codecs
  • Basic HTML and Photoshop skills and experience with online publishing tools
  • Knowledge of JW Player
  • Photo and video editing skills
  • Knowledge of SEO and Google Analytics
  • Social media savvy
