Requirements
- At least 10 years of comprehensive risk and compliance leadership experience, including a minimum of 2 years specializing in regulatory compliance within the cryptocurrency industry
- At least 5 years of leadership experience managing and developing corporate compliance teams, with a focus on transaction monitoring, BSA/AML compliance, and risk management programs
- Varied experience supporting different environments and teams, including both startup/small company settings and large, established companies, demonstrating adaptability and hands-on leadership
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage and inspire a diverse compliance team, foster collaboration across departments, and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to influence, motivate, and guide teams while ensuring alignment with compliance objectives
- Experience working with regulators and agencies, including FinCEN, OFAC, IRS, CFPB, FINTRAC, Bank of Canada, AFm / DNB Europe and NYDFS, with direct involvement in licensing and regulatory compliance matters
- Working knowledge of the U.S. and EU travel rules, OFAC sanctions regulations, and CFPB consumer protection rules
- Strong background in compliance for consumer and business (merchant) financial products
- Experience with NYDFS regulations, including the BitLicense process and Part 504 compliance
- Proven ability to advise senior leadership on compliance strategy, risk management, budgets, and corporate communications
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage regulators, stakeholders, and clients across various levels
- A track record of success in fast-paced, performance-driven environments, balancing risk management with business growth
- CAMS certification is required
Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the global onboarding, KYC/KYB, BSA/AML, sanctions, and transaction monitoring compliance teams and programs, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and industry best practices
- Provide strategic compliance and enterprise risk guidance to the executive team and Board of Directors, ensuring alignment with BitPayβs business objectives
- Supervise national and global licensing acquisition and maintenance, including new license applications and ongoing compliance
- Act as the primary liaison with regulators and manage interactions with agencies such as FinCEN, OFAC, IRS, CFPB, FINTRAC, Bank of Canada, AFM / DNB Europe, and state regulators (e.g., NYDFS)
- Serve as the lead for money transmitter and virtual asset licensing compliance, overseeing regulatory reporting and license expansion efforts
- Drive a culture of compliance and risk awareness by developing and delivering training initiatives for employees and stakeholders
- Oversee compliance onboarding functions while collaborating with sales, product, customer success, and finance teams to align compliance with business growth
- Stay ahead of regulatory changes and proactively update policies and procedures, incorporating risk assessments for new products and services
- Work with cross-functional teams to develop disclosures and procedures that meet regulatory requirements for new product launches
- Serve as the point of contact for internal audits and regulatory inquiries, ensuring transparency and cooperation in compliance matters
- Review independent compliance audits and assessments, ensuring timely remediation and reporting of findings to key stakeholders
- Regularly report to executive leadership, the Enterprise Risk Committee, and Board of Directors, providing insights into compliance risks and mitigation strategies
Preferred Qualifications
CGSS, CRCM, and blockchain forensic tool certifications are strongly preferred
