Summary

Equality Now is seeking a Communications Officer for their South Asia and Ending Harmful Practices program. The role involves developing and implementing communication strategies to advance objectives related to sexual violence and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage in South Asia. The candidate should have at least 3 years of experience in communications, fluency in English and Hindi or another major South Asian language, and strong relationship management skills.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of working experience in communications in national, regional, or international contexts
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • A strong understanding of the regional and cultural context of South Asia, particularly concerning gender justice and equality
  • Contact with national and regional women’s rights networks would be a plus
  • Understanding/demonstrable experience of advocacy communications campaign strategy
  • Understanding/demonstrable experience in project management
  • A good all-rounder in ideating and delivering/executing communication tactics: events, PR; social media; press, etc
  • Must have a demonstrable track record in placing stories in media outlets and have journalist contacts
  • High-quality writing skills - that extend to digital channels, particularly social
  • A working understanding of how best to use digital and social platforms in the South Asia region
  • Creativity, and the ability to apply it to agreed strategies to achieve communications objectives
  • An understanding of human rights institutions regionally and nationally
  • Fluent in English and Hindi or another major South Asian language (written and verbal)
  • Takes accountability for actions and works with minimum supervision

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a South Asia communications strategy that advances and amplifies Equality Now's objectives related to sexual violence and harmful practices in international and regional spaces
  • Lead on the SAMAJ (South Asia Movement for Accessing Justice) communications work, including developing a long-term communications strategy, implementing aspects of the agreed strategy, anchoring the communication work within the Steering Committee, and providing ongoing support
  • Act as the communications representative for Equality Now within any other regional coalitions, attending meetings, contributing to strategy discussions, and actioning tasks in collaboration with the global communications team
  • Project manage the production (design, translation, and dissemination/promotion) of Programs-drafted knowledge products
  • Provide planning, promotional, technical, and follow-up communications support for virtual and in-person events
  • Create a calendar of strategic communications activities that proactively raise awareness of the issues addressed by Equality Now's work in South Asia to agreed stakeholders, particularly lawmakers and other key decision makers
  • Leverage media coverage and digital channels as advocacy tools to increase understanding of South Asia-focused campaign issues; build brand awareness about EN and our work in South Asia; and generate positive media coverage featuring EN campaigns in identified outlets
  • Maximize media opportunities and secure positive media coverage for EN & regional partners by proactively pitching ideas to national, regional, and international media; respond promptly and effectively to incoming media inquiries; work with comms and program team to provide expert comment
  • Monitor and report on media or communication opportunities that EN can respond to
  • Identify opportunities to recruit regional professionals to our professionals network and create content that builds trust and engagement with this group
