Join SimplePractice as the Director of Tax and take ownership of all tax accounting, reporting, and compliance processes. This critical role requires substantial expertise and a collaborative mindset to navigate the company's growth and scaling. You will be the technical leader on tax accounting matters, leading due diligence for M&A, managing audits, and staying current on tax laws. The position reports to the VP, Controller, and initially functions as an individual contributor supporting domestic and international expansion. This role demands extensive experience in tax accounting, reporting, and compliance within a private equity-owned company, including experience with debt and tax carve-outs. Requirements
- Minimum of 12 years of related experience with a combination of Big 4 public accounting and industry experience
- CPA license required (Big4 experience preferred)
- Experience with tax accounting and reporting under US GAAP in multinational context, including accounting for uncertain tax positions
- Experience with US federal and state corporate tax and Sales tax compliance
- Strong analytical thinking and writing skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to conduct thorough tax research
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational leadership
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience in a fast moving, high growth environment with ability to react quickly to unexpected challenges and opportunities
- Good business sense and ability to generate insightful analysis
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex subject matter to leadership, peers and other levels in the company without a tax background
- Extremely well organized and able to manage work requirements to meet reporting deadlines
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Responsibilities
- Oversee tax compliance including U.S. federal, state and international tax compliance process, including indirect taxes, R&D and foreign tax credits, VAT matters and expense allocations
- Partner with the outside consultants, to advise on global projects, review tax opportunities, develop forecasts and optimize tax department operations
- Be the technical leader on all tax accounting matters
- Lead tax due diligence and structuring for mergers and acquisitions
- Manage federal, state, and local tax audits
- Maintain knowledge of current and proposed tax laws and analyze their impact on the Company
- Research technical tax matters and prepare documentation to support tax positions
- Support strategic tax planning, identify, recommend, and implement policies, procedures and best practices
- Continuously monitor and proactively Identify and obtain tax incentives for the company
- Define tax policies, develop tax strategies and implement tax processes and procedures
- Work with 3rd party service providers to design the optimum corporate tax structure most suitable for the Companyβs long-range business model and plan that would provide the long-term tax benefit for the Corporation which will include in person collaboration with auditors and others
- Work with various internal and external teams including Legal, Product, FP&A, and the Accounting teams to explore, identify, apply and/or implement various tax initiatives
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters in Tax or JD preferred
- Extensive experience with tax accounting and reporting under ASC 740 for a US-based multi-national corporation
- Understand tax treatment for debt including interest expense deductions/limitations
- Working for a private equity portfolio company including experience with tax carve outs
