Summary

Join 1Password's Data Security team as an Engineering Manager, leading a team of Software Developers and Security Engineers in tackling complex cryptography challenges. You will be instrumental in building secure foundations for 1Password products, collaborating with Product and Security Engineering on a multi-year security roadmap. Responsibilities include shaping security initiatives, bringing new technologies to market, and ensuring scalability. A key role involves hiring, mentoring, and growing a team of technical experts. This remote position, available in Canada and the US, offers a chance to make security more accessible and human. The ideal candidate possesses a strong data security background, ideally in applied cryptography, and proven team leadership experience.

Requirements

  • A strong background in data security, ideally in applied cryptography
  • Implementing modern symmetric or asymmetric cryptographic algorithms
  • Building or integrating digital signature schemes and hash functions
  • Delivering key management systems, key distribution protocols, or working with hardware security modules
  • Identifying and mitigating real-world security vulnerabilities and attack vectors
  • You’ve managed or technically led a team of developers and owned application development from planning to delivery
  • You bring hands-on engineering experience and have tackled complex, ambiguous problems through code
  • You use your technical background to coach developers and elevate team performance
  • You’ve led cross-functional projects that span multiple systems, teams, or architectural layers
  • You create a positive, inclusive team environment where people feel supported, challenged, and energized
  • You make thoughtful decisions — even with limited information — and guide your team through tough trade-offs
  • You’re not afraid to get into the technical weeds when needed to unblock or accelerate progress
  • You drive delivery and long-term planning, shaping roadmaps that balance execution with strategic goals
  • You communicate clearly across disciplines, balancing security best practices with business needs

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of engineers in a culture of innovation, execution, and collaboration
  • Scope, prioritize, and plan impactful security initiatives in partnership with your team
  • Drive high-quality execution through iterative delivery, velocity, and clear communication
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership within your team and across engineering
  • Build and support a diverse, inclusive team where people grow and thrive
  • Help scale a specialized team by refining hiring, onboarding, and growth practices in partnership with fellow EMs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with post-quantum cryptography (e.g., lattice-based algorithms) in theory or practice
  • Familiarity with evolving cryptographic standards and bodies (e.g., NIST), and how they shape implementation decisions
