Summary

The job is for a Freelance Production Editor at Lonely Planet, responsible for layout and project management of guidebooks and other products. The position requires strong desktop publishing skills, project management abilities, attention to detail, editing skills, media law knowledge, communication skills, and general knowledge about travel.

Requirements

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in relevant area (publishing and editing or journalism preferred), or equivalent work experience
  • Strong desktop publishing skills (preferably InDesign)
  • Excellent project-management skills, including the ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail, and the ability to closely follow production and design manuals
  • Strong editing skills, with previous experience in book editing or journalism preferred
  • Media law knowledge, including ability to spot potential defamation or copyright infringement
  • Proven ability to work with standard editorial conventions
  • Proven ability to work with content management systems
  • Well-developed communication and negotiation skills, including providing clear, concise instructions via email
  • Proven ability to work with electronic-file-management and naming conventions
  • Sound knowledge of spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Good general knowledge and a love of travel
  • Ability to adapt to new technology, processes and change

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the entire layout process for guidebooks and other products in InDesign
  • Liaise with cartographers, book designers (photo editors) and other team members as necessary
  • Ensure high-quality travel titles adhering to Lonely Planet’s publishing standards, on deadline and to budget

Preferred Qualifications

  • Publishing, journalism or book industry experience
  • Awareness of Lonely Planet products and series
  • Experience using project-management tools such as Excel for task tracking and scheduling
  • Experience working with maps (accuracy and quality checks)
  • Experience selecting or reviewing images for publication, and writing image captions
  • Knowledge of travel industry issues, such as accessible/sustainable travel and cultural sensitivity
