Requirements

  • BS in Civil engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years of diverse and progressive geotechnical experience with a focus on Rail
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Excellent communication and intrapersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills with a track record for adhering to design budgets and schedules
  • Experience performing soil-related work (classification, lab testing, reporting, etc.)
  • Ability to perform complex analysis and design
  • Proficiency in utilizing MS Suite, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word, along with expertise in specialized software such as LPILE, Rocscience, ASHTO pavement design, Pcase, and Stable, is highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist with project setup and coordination and preliminary desktop study of site conditions
  • Mentor junior engineers with field data collection procedures, policies and protocols
  • Verify that work performed during subsurface explorations is performed in accordance with railroad and Benesch safety requirements, proposal documents, and ASTM specifications
  • Verify that soil samples acquired during the geotechnical exploration are handled and delivered to the material testing laboratory in accordance with ASTM specifications
  • Review and approve completed assignments performed and submitted by Geotechnical Designer (Staff Engineer) including: Field work activities, Laboratory test schedule and subsequent results, Boring logs, Reports and Memorandums
  • Review and recommend solutions regarding emerging issues during project construction phases to ensure geotechnical aspects are properly addressed and implemented
  • Monitor and test civil and structural installations including cut and fill earthwork, footing and pile installation, and ground stabilization activities
  • Plan and coordinate Geotechnical Instrumentation for remote monitoring
  • Perform geotechnical evaluations, calculations, and designs for ballast, subballast, subgrade, slopes, pavements, retaining walls, and foundations (footings and piles)
  • Prepare draft geotechnical engineering reports
  • Support subsurface investigations, geologic reconnaissance, and on-site data collection, including soil and rock sampling
  • Interact with internal and external clients, project teams, sub-consultants, and contractors
