Lead Android Engineer

Summary

Join Leonardo.Ai, an Australian technology start-up, as an Android Lead to build the next generation of AI-powered visual asset creation products. You will lead a small team of Android engineers, collaborating with iOS, design, product, and AI teams. Responsibilities include mentoring engineers, building high-quality native experiences using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Coroutines, driving planning and architecture, working closely with designers, and ensuring engineering excellence. The role involves shaping the direction of the work and establishing scalable ways of working as the mobile organization expands. This position requires strong Android engineering experience, team leadership skills, architectural thinking, and API & tooling proficiency. A collaborative mindset and technical confidence are essential.

Requirements

• Android Craftsmanship: Strong engineering experience using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, and Flow
• Team Leadership: Experience guiding teams, whether formally or informally and creating a supportive, high-performing environment
• Architectural Thinking: A solid handle on app architecture, lifecycle management, and performance optimisation
• API & Tooling Proficiency: Comfort working with GraphQL APIs and Gradle build systems
• Collaborative Mindset: You naturally bring people into the process and keep stakeholders informed
• Technical Confidence: You know how to navigate complexity, make intelligent trade-offs, and bring others with you

Responsibilities

• Lead with purpose – You’ll mentor a small group of Android engineers, help shape the direction of the work, and be a key partner to product, design, and engineering leadership
• Build high-quality native experiences – You’ll lean into what makes Android great and build fast, intuitive features with Jetpack Compose, Kotlin, and Coroutines
• Drive planning and architecture – From system design to implementation, you’ll bring clarity to how we approach new features, such as conversational UI
• Work closely with design – We don’t throw things over the fence here. You’ll work side by side with designers to shape ideas together early, not just deliver them late
• Raise the bar – You’ll write clean, scalable code, review PRs, and help set the tone for engineering excellence on the team
• Support others to grow – You’ll help your teammates move toward senior and staff levels with the right mix of support and challenge
• Stay curious – Whether it's a new pattern, library, or leadership approach, you’ll bring fresh thinking to the team

Preferred Qualifications

Startup Experience (Nice to Have): Background in fast-paced product teams where you’ve had to wear multiple hats
